Epic says Fortnite will be the first test for a new Linux anti-cheat system designed to bring protection closer to its Windows version.

If they really use Linux features by default, that is the right approach. The problem is always the same – every distro wants to be a little different, and anti-cheat hates differences. Fortnite being the first test is smart because it will expose the ugly parts fast. I just hope they do not stop at desktop Linux and forget handhelds.

@duelist10 the handheld angle is the interesting part to me too. If SteamOS is covered, Epic gets a lot more players than just random desktop users.

the signed kernel stuff makes sense but it is still a big ask for casual players. most people just want to install and queue, not mess with boot settings.

Epic mentioning the Microsoft UEFI CA and then saying they want the list open source later is a funny mix of practical and idealistic. It sounds like they know they need the boring infrastructure stuff first, which is probably why this has taken so long. If they can make it work with Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE and SteamOS type setups, that is already a decent baseline. The real test is whether developers actually bother to enable it once the tools exist.

@Ondra K the developer part is the key. if it is still opt-in, a lot of games will just ignore it like before
