The six-minute bit leaned on car theft, RPGs and Hyrule puzzles, then drew mixed-to-negative reaction over recycled jokes and sharply different costume quality.

The weirdest part is how much the sketch leaned on GTA being just car theft. If you're doing Jason in 2026, at least try to make the joke feel like it knows the actual game instead of the most tired shorthand.

@orbFalcon yeah, but SNL isn't trying to do a deep cut. they wanted instant read and Link has way more visual shorthand than Jason right now, so the imbalance was baked in.

instant read is one thing, but they still could've written around the new stuff better. 'car theft man' vs 'puzzle elf' is basically a reddit comment in sketch form.

The live crowd reacting harder to Zelda bits makes sense to me. Link is a known quantity and the tunic being accurate probably helped, while Jason was carrying a lot of pre-release hype with not much else on screen.

I think the costume gap mattered more than people want to admit. When one side looks like a proper character and the other looks like a generic crime guy, the sketch already tells the audience who the punchline is supposed to be. That's why the old gamer stereotype jokes landed so flat – they were doing all the work for the writers, and the writers had nothing newer to add.
