Sony said stronger non-first-party game sales lifted its gaming outlook, while Marvel’s Wolverine passed 2.4 million units 50 days after launch.

The MAU figure is the most interesting part to me, not the Wolverine sales. Hardware slowing in a mature cycle is expected, but a record September engagement number suggests Sony is getting more out of each user than before. That is probably why they are so comfortable leaning into subscriptions and third-party software.

rogue1992, that is fair, but I still think the company is leaning too hard on non-first-party software because the hardware side is flattening. A 6% forecast bump off third-party sales and services is nice, but it also says a lot about where the easy growth is coming from. If the next console cycle gets expensive, Sony will squeeze the same audience even more.

And then they will call it 'monetisation'. The funny bit is that the platform can look healthy while everyone quietly pays more for the same ecosystem. That is the modern console business in one neat little spreadsheet.

Wolverine's 2.4 million in 50 days is not a flop, but it is clearly not at the Spider-Man level either. What stands out is how Sony frames it – they are talking about story, production values, and feedback, which usually means they are trying to defend a number that is fine but not huge.

I think people read too much doom into that. New IP-adjacent stuff always has a lower ceiling than a mega-franchise, and 2.4m with a first official update is still decent. The real story is Sony having GTA 6 in the marketing pipeline while Wolverine keeps the first-party side looking busy.

I do not buy the 'stable shape' wording around PS5. If sales are down and prices are up, the stability is coming from engagement and services, not from healthy console momentum. That is fine for Sony, but it is not the same thing as a strong hardware era.
