The 2026 Game Changers Championship began today at Riot Games Studio in São Paulo, Brazil, and the first two matches produced the same scoreline: MIBR GC and SK Nebula both won 2-0. The opening day featured four of the world’s top ten Game Changers teams, and the results sent FENNEL GC and Nova Esports GC into the lower bracket while MIBR and SK moved into the upper quarterfinals.

MIBR GC overpower FENNEL GC in their opener

The day started with Americas Last Chance Qualifier winners MIBR GC against Pacific No. 2 seed FENNEL GC. MIBR came into GCC 2026 after finishing third at GCC 2025, and their roster had changed across the year with the additions of waved, mizzy and former KRÜ BLAZE player conir. FENNEL, meanwhile, was making its first GCC appearance as an organization, but the lineup carried championship experience through three former ZETA DIVISION GC players: suzu, Moco and SereNa.

Sunset was FENNEL’s map pick, and the Japanese side leaned into the Sage-Chamber composition that LOUD has popularized in recent months. MIBR answered with Neon and Phoenix, then controlled the map from defense with a 9-3 halftime lead. FENNEL found space in Mid early in rounds, but MIBR repeatedly shut down the follow-up hit when the attackers contacted the bombsites. mizzy was a major reason the map got away from FENNEL, locking down B and collecting 17 kills in the first half.

FENNEL won the second pistol, but MIBR stopped the recovery before it started and closed Sunset 13-5. mizzy finished with 19 kills, while waved added 18 and recorded eight first bloods. The scoreline reflected the same pattern throughout the map: FENNEL could win a fight or force a brief opening, but MIBR’s trades and site discipline took over the moment the round became messy.

Ascent was MIBR’s pick, and the second map followed the same script. FENNEL tried an unusual setup with Omen, Astra and Chamber, while MIBR kept a standard Jett-Phoenix composition. MIBR then built a 10-2 attack side on repeated site hits and efficient ultimate use, and two post-pistol full ecos for FENNEL only stretched the gap further. MIBR closed it out 13-5 for the sweep.

waved led the way on Ascent with a 24/12/3 KDA on Phoenix, and across the full series she finished with a 42/24/8 KDA, 11 first bloods and 202 ADR. MIBR now moves on to face G2 Gozen on Saturday, Oct. 24. FENNEL falls to the lower bracket and will play the loser of KRÜ BLAZE vs. Gen.G GC on Sunday, Oct. 25.

SK Nebula roll past Nova Esports GC

The second series matched EMEA No. 3 seed SK Nebula against returning China representatives Nova Esports GC. Nova kept a core of Clem, alyssa and 7er from its previous lineup, while SK arrived as a GCC newcomer with two players who have been here before in rezq and Joliinaa. That mix of continuity and fresh faces showed up quickly once the maps began.

Sunset was Nova’s pick, but SK made it look lopsided from the opening rounds. The European side dismantled Nova’s Sage-Chamber look with a Waylay-Yoru attack side and ran away with a 13-3 win. Nova managed only two defensive rounds, one of them coming on a Sheriff thrifty, and the rest of the map belonged to SK’s trading and clutching. LizA, Thuy and fluxxy each added 1v2 clutches, while rezq led the scoreboard with a 21/11/6 KDA and a 1.62 rating.

Split was tighter in the early rounds. Nova was more competitive in site fights and reached halftime tied 6-6 after SK won the pistol, but the second pistol went SK’s way and shifted the map again. A rezq ace helped SK reach 12-9, and the map closed 13-9. rezq again topped the kill chart, ending with 23 kills on Skye and 44 across the series.

SK Nebula advances to face North American champions Shopify Rebellion Gold in the upper bracket on Saturday, Oct. 24. Nova Esports GC drops to the lower bracket and will meet the loser of Team Liquid Brazil vs. Gentle Mates GC on Oct. 25.

Two sweeps set the bracket on day one

Monday’s opening matches split the field between the upper and lower brackets immediately. MIBR GC won with disciplined defensive reads and strong opening picks from waved and mizzy, while SK Nebula leaned on individual round-winning plays from rezq, LizA and Thuy to break Nova’s resistance. Both teams also made the most of pistol rounds, and both series turned on how quickly the winning side converted those early advantages into map control.

The schedule now moves into the next round of upper-bracket play, with MIBR GC set for G2 Gozen and SK Nebula lined up against Shopify Rebellion Gold. FENNEL GC and Nova Esports GC must take the longer route through elimination matches if they want to stay alive in São Paulo.

The first day also showed how little margin there is at this level. On both maps, small timing advantages turned into site hits, and single clutch rounds swung the economy enough to close out the game. MIBR and SK each used that margin cleanly, while FENNEL and Nova were left to recover in the lower bracket after one day of play.

It does feel a bit funny seeing both matches end the same way, but the actual gap matters more than the scoreline. MIBR looked way more comfortable in mid-rounds, and SK’s clutches basically broke Nova every time they tried to stabilize. That’s what upper bracket teams usually do – take the first pistol, snowball, and never let the lower seed breathe. The 2-0s are less ‘free win’ and more ‘good prep showed up on stage’.
