Blizzard has announced a new class tuning pass for World of Warcraft that will go live with scheduled weekly maintenance on October 27 in this region. The update buffs Feral Druid damage in PvE, cuts back Subtlety Rogue after a compensation buff went too far, and adjusts a long list of damage dealers and healers across both PvE and PvP.
The notes point to a familiar pattern: specs that are lagging in raids, dungeons or battlegrounds are getting help, while specs that climbed too high after earlier tuning are being pulled back. Some changes are aimed at dungeon healing in particular, and Blizzard says several PvP adjustments are meant to narrow the gap between underused and overperforming builds.
Feral gets a straightforward PvE damage buff
Feral Druids are one of the clearest winners in the patch notes. Blizzard is increasing all damage done by 5% for Feral in PvE, with no effect in PvP combat. The change is simple compared with the rest of the tuning pass, which spreads across multiple specializations and several different content types.
Restoration Druid is getting a more targeted set of buffs. Blizzard said the spec is meant to help with burst damage in dungeons, where it is behind other healers, while also noting that it is already performing well in raid settings. Because of that, the tuning focuses on talents and abilities that matter most in 5-player groups.
- Verdancy healing increased by 60%.
- Regrowth healing increased by 10%.
- Improved Swiftmend now increases Swiftmend healing by 40%, up from 30%.
All three Druid changes are limited to PvE and do not affect PvP combat.
Subtlety Rogues lose most of their extra damage
Subtlety Rogues are heading in the other direction. Blizzard said the compensation buff the spec received alongside changes in patch 12.1.5 overshot expectations, and that those same changes benefited Trickster more than Deathstalker. The result is a broad reduction to Subtlety’s damage, plus a smaller nerf to one Trickster talent.
- All ability damage reduced by 8%.
- Trickster: Fazed now increases damage by 5%, down from 7%.
The adjustment is a rollback of part of the earlier compensation, not a redesign of the specialization. Blizzard’s note also makes clear that the smaller Trickster reduction is tied to the way the 12.1.5 changes played out in practice.
Other PvE buffs cover hunters, mages and warlocks
Marksmanship Hunter is getting help with area damage in PvE. Blizzard says the changes are meant to improve that aspect of the spec’s kit, and the numbers are all moving upward:
- Trick Shots now increases the ricochet damage of Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire by 85%, up from 75%.
- Explosive Shot damage increased by 10%.
- Volley damage increased by 10%.
Fire Mage is also receiving a 5% damage increase in PvE, with no PvP effect attached to that change. Warlocks get buffs on both of their tuned PvE specializations: Unstable Affliction damage is up by 20% for Affliction, while Destruction’s Rain of Fire damage is also increased by 20%.
PvP tuning targets overperformers and weak hero-tree options
The PvP side of the pass is broader and more granular. Blizzard is trimming Fire Mage after saying it has continued to overperform, while also lifting several specs that have struggled to compete this season. The changes touch damage, healing, absorbs and hero-tree interactions.
Fire Mage is reduced by 5% in all damage done in PvP combat. Frost Mage, by contrast, is getting buffs to a few Frostfire burst tools because Blizzard says Frostfire has not been a competitive option this season and needs a different damage profile from Spellslinger.
- Frostfire: Isothermic Core’s Meteor damage increased by 20% in PvP combat.
- Frostfire: Duality’s Pyroblast damage increased by 20% in PvP combat.
Hunters receive one of the larger PvP tune-ups. Marksmanship’s Kill Shot damage is up by 40% in PvP combat, Deathblow now has a higher chance to be activated by Aimed Shot, and Dark Ranger’s Black Arrow damage is also up by 40% in PvP combat.
Death Knights, Demon Hunters and Evokers are on the receiving end of targeted PvP adjustments as well. Blizzard says the last changes to San’layn did improve its viability, but Vampiric Strike is still doing more than desired, so it is being reduced in PvP. Devourer Demon Hunters get a buff to Collapsing Star, and Preservation Evokers using Chronowarden see stronger healing and damage interactions on Living Flame and Verdant Embrace.
- San’layn: Vampiric Strike damage reduced by 20% in PvP combat.
- Devourer: Collapsing Star damage increased by 20% in PvP combat.
- Chronowarden: Chronal Dynamo increases the healing and damage of Living Flame by 80% when not an instant cast in PvP combat, up from 50%.
- Chronowarden: Reverberations now causes Verdant Embrace to heal for an additional 80% over 8 seconds in PvP combat, up from 40%.
Healers get PvP boosts to throughput and support tools
Several healers are also being adjusted for PvP. Mistweaver Monk’s Conduit of the Celestials is being strengthened because Blizzard says it has not been a competitive option this season, so both its healing and absorption go up. Holy Paladin is getting a throughput increase too, along with a bigger mana-cost reduction on Holy Light through Divine Favor. Blizzard says Holy Paladin has been underperforming and wants to promote casted healing.
- Conduit of the Celestials: Celestial Conduit healing increased by 35% in PvP combat.
- Conduit of the Celestials: Strength of the Black Ox absorb increased by 25% in PvP combat.
- All Holy Paladin healing increased by 5% in PvP combat.
- Divine Favor now reduces the mana cost of Holy Light by 50% in PvP combat, up from 30%.
Priests are getting a larger set of Holy changes, aimed at improving Archon’s PvP performance. Blizzard is increasing Prayer of Healing’s group healing and strengthening several Archon effects tied to healing proc interactions.
- Prayerful Litany now causes the primary target of Prayer of Healing to be healed for 75% more in PvP combat, down from 125%.
- Prayer of Healing healing increased by 30% in PvP combat.
- Archon: Resonant Energy now increases healing done by 4% per stack in PvP combat, up from 2%.
- Archon: Empowered Surges now increases the healing of spells affected by Surge of Light by 10% in PvP combat, up from 5%.
- Archon: Realized Potential now increases Flash Heal healing by 25% in PvP combat, up from 20%.
Rounding out the healer changes, Restoration Shaman gets a modest boost to totem healing in PvP.
- Healing Stream Totem and Stormstream Totem healing increased by 20% in PvP combat.
The new tuning arrives with the October 27 weekly reset, and it continues a run of Blizzard balance updates that have recently touched dungeon tuning, PvP rewards and other World of Warcraft systems. The latest class pass is broad, but the message is simple: Feral is up, Subtlety is down, and a number of specs on both sides of the game are being nudged toward the performance Blizzard wants to see.
are feral players actually back on the menu with that 5% pve buff, or is this just another tiny nudge that won’t move the needle in raids?
5% is not tiny when it’s full damage in PvE. sub losing 8% while feral gets a clean buff means the gap should move pretty fast.
maybe, but Blizzard loves making one spec feel good while the rest of the tree stays awkward. if the rotation still feels clunky, 5% just hides the problem for a week.
fair, but at least this one is numbers first instead of a weird rework. we’ll see if logs calm down after reset or if feral still needs help.
sub rogue got cooked
for the pvp side, is that 40% kill shot buff enough to make marks actually scary again, or does the spec still feel too setup heavy? i mostly see mm when they are fed and the target just melts, but on equal gear it feels kinda meh. wondering if the black arrow boost changes that or if it’s still the same lane.
honestly the setup is still the issue. bigger Kill Shot is nice, but if you miss the go you are just kiting for nothing.
It helps a lot when burst lines up, but MM still lives or dies on clean windows. Kill Shot being up 40% is nasty if they get a target low, though.
why would black arrow fix the setup problem though? sounds more like a damage bump than a real flow change.
finally feral gets something real, 5% pve damage is a proper buff
and sub gets nerf because blizzard cannot balance a compensation buff. predictable.
true, but at least they called it out instead of pretending it was intended. if a spec jumps because of a temporary buff, i’d rather they pull it back fast than leave it busted for a whole season. the 8% hit is a lot though, so sub might feel rough until they settle on the next pass.
my feral alt finally got invited to a dungeon last night and i was already thinking they were about to nerf me instead of buffing lol
i’ve had the opposite, honestly. feral feels weirdly feast or famine in random groups, either people forget you exist or they suddenly want the bleed machine when big trash packs show up. the 5% should at least make that burst window less embarrassing, assuming the rest of the group doesn’t delete the pack first.
Maybe the party just needed a cat with better punctuality. Blizzard’s patch note timing has the same energy as a druid showing up after the pull starts.
