Using your own customized controller is such a great feeling. After all, a controller is your primary tool to connect to digital alternate universes. Customizing a controller with a controller skin or by painting it is a logical step for passionate gamers, much like a warrior who wishes to wield a sword unique to them.
Before getting started, it’s worth noting that even the best custom controller skin or paint job can’t hold a candle to one of our professionally-hydro-dipped custom Xbox One controllers and PS4 controllers. Customizing a controller yourself can be a super fun project, but if you want a truly stunning custom controller, check out our selection.
These days, you have endless options for skins. If you have a very specific vision in mind for how you want your controller to look, there’s a good chance that you’ll be able to find or create a skin for it.
That sounds great in theory, but there are some drawbacks to using a custom controller skin. For starters, applying them can be tricky, and they often end up looking just...off. There may be a little extra space here and there, some crooked parts, and some lumps, as applying them perfectly requires some steady hands and a whole lot of luck.
Another aspect of using a controller skin is that your controller feels different. That change might not bother you, and you might even prefer the skin texture. But some gamers may find that the new texture just doesn’t feel right.
On the other side of the coin, if you’re not an experienced painter, a home paint job can look a little rough around the edges -- often even worse than a poorly-applied controller skin.
Just like using a custom controller skin, the other problem with painting a controller is that it changes how the controller feels in your hands, and pretty drastically too. Even if you apply a clear coat to cover rough paint, you’re still going to notice the difference.
Painting a controller is a wonderful little project, but we don’t recommend trying it without some practice. Start by painting an old controller or two first. Pro tip: check online for used or even broken controllers. Xbox One controllers have a replaceable shell, so you can even switch between your favorite paint jobs.
Even if you’re not exactly thrilled with the paint job when you’re done, you can still keep it around as a spare, or even cover it with a new controller skin.
If you’re hesitant to use a custom controller skin or paint, but you still want a customized controller, we’ve got some good news for you. We start with genuine Sony/Microsoft products and apply beautiful designs that don’t fade over time.
