Emerald is the smartest part of this for me. Diamond has been doing too much work as both the skill gate and the grind wall, so a middle step might actually smooth out the ladder.
The weird part is Respawn saying solo queue technically worked. That usually means the spreadsheet won and the actual game lost, which is very on brand for matchmaking.
