World of Warcraft’s Devourer Demon Hunter is getting a large round of Patch 12.1.5 adjustments ahead of the next patch on October 13. Wowhead’s Voodoosauras says the goal is to smooth out Collapsing Star, reduce the spec’s awkward stop-start behavior, and make the talent tree easier to build around.
Devourer is still the newest Demon Hunter specialization in World of Warcraft, arriving with 12.0 and the launch of Midnight. Since then, Blizzard has already made several major changes to the spec, and this patch continues that pattern with updates aimed at both gameplay feel and talent structure. The biggest targets are Collapsing Star, Void-Scarred’s melee-focused loop, and the crowded lower rows of the tree.
Collapsing Star is losing its harsh cancel penalty
One of the main complaints around Devourer has been Collapsing Star’s cancel behavior. Blizzard’s developer notes say cancelled casts have been a pain point since the specialization launched. The old cooldown after an interrupted or cancelled cast was meant to stop players from abusing the slowed Fury drain during the cast, but it also punished normal situations like a target dying, moving out of range, or a mechanic forcing a cancel.
Patch 12.1.5 changes that in several ways:
- Collapsing Star now has increased range after it starts casting.
- Collapsing Star no longer goes on cooldown for 5 seconds when its cast is cancelled.
- Collapsing Star now slows Fury drain during its cast only for a limited time.
- If the cast is cancelled and started again, the total slow from repeated attempts is capped at about 1.5 full casts.
Blizzard said it wanted “a middle ground where normal gameplay will not be punished” while still cutting down on manipulation of the slowed Fury drain. That should make the spell easier to use in ordinary play, especially in fights where targets move or mechanics force brief interruptions.
Wowhead also points out why the issue was so frustrating in practice. Collapsing Star is supposed to be Devourer’s big payoff button, but its long cast time and medium range made it awkward whenever players needed to reposition. The extra range after the cast starts is meant to give it more room to finish without failing for small movement errors.
Void-Scarred is being pushed to cast Collapsing Star
The bigger gameplay reshuffle is aimed at Void-Scarred. According to Wowhead’s review, the tree had been rewarding repeated entries into Void Metamorphosis so heavily that players could end up favoring a fast melee rhythm over the spec’s signature cast. In some multi-target situations, the optimal play could even involve effectively pausing at the end of a Void Metamorphosis cycle so the next one could start sooner. That pattern came from Rolling Torment and the power granted by entering Void Metamorphosis, and it is the sort of behavior Blizzard has said it does not want to encourage.
Patch 12.1.5 shifts some of those bonuses so Collapsing Star itself becomes part of the reward. Blizzard’s notes say the ability is intended to be a feature of Devourer’s rotation no matter which hero talents are selected, so Void-Scarred is being adjusted to make that happen.
The changes include:
- Demonic Intensity now causes Collapsing Star to reset the cooldown of The Hunt.
- Demonic Intensity’s empower effect for The Hunt now increases its damage by 30%.
- Violent Transformation now resets the cooldown of Soul Immolation.
- Violent Transformation no longer resets The Hunt.
- Violent Transformation no longer increases The Hunt’s damage or resets Soul Immolation.
- Monster Rising now increases Intellect by 10% while not in demon form, down from 15%.
- Monster Rising now increases Collapsing Star damage by 20%, up from 15%.
Wowhead says the aim is to break the quick melee cycle and bring back casting Collapsing Star as a normal part of the rotation. On live servers, The Hunt had been resetting when entering Void Metamorphosis, which let players fire off empowered abilities at the start of each window. Under the new setup, The Hunt resets from casting Collapsing Star instead, so the spell is woven into the loop rather than bypassed.
There is still a tradeoff. Longer Void Metamorphosis windows would otherwise create more opportunities to use The Hunt, so Blizzard removed the old damage bonus from Violent Transformation and adjusted Monster Rising to keep the tree from over-scaling. Wowhead says the change does make Void-Scarred want to press Collapsing Star, but it also adds pressure to the spec’s bottom talent gate.
The bottom of the tree is being loosened
That pressure is a big part of the next update. Wowhead says the lower gate had become overloaded with talents that many builds needed just to function. Eradicate was required for fights with two or more targets, the left side leading to The Hunt was needed for Void-Scarred, Calamitous was needed for all builds, Devourer’s Bite was needed for melee-focused builds, and the Apex talent Midnight was needed for Collapsing Star builds.
Blizzard followed the first round of 12.1.5 changes with another pass the week after. That follow-up moved some important effects higher in the tree and made a few tuning adjustments at the same time. The later notes include:
- Soulforged Blades now increases the critical strike chance of Hungering Slash and Voidblade by 18%, up from 15%.
- Voidpurge now reduces the cooldown of Void Ray during Void Metamorphosis by 2.5 seconds, up from 2 seconds.
- The Hunt and Eradicate are moving to more accessible positions in the middle gate.
- Some talents are shifting to new spots to make room for the reshuffle.
- Demonic Instinct now connects to the talent one row down and one column to the left.
- Devourer’s Edge now connects to the talent one row down and one column to the right.
Blizzard said the final gate had become too dense and that some capstone talents were holding effects that should be easier to reach. Moving The Hunt and Eradicate out of the capstone row should make it simpler to assemble a working build without sacrificing as much of the spec’s core identity.
Those talent changes also fit the larger direction of the patch. Earlier tuning in 12.1 had already reduced Void Metamorphosis power, trimmed Collapsing Star scaling, and shifted some players toward Void-Scarred while others stayed with Annihilator, especially in coordinated keys. Patch 12.1.5 tries to narrow that gap by making Collapsing Star useful in both paths and by reducing the awkward compromises required to complete the tree.
For Devourer players, that means a more forgiving Collapsing Star, fewer reasons to ignore the spec’s marquee button, and a talent layout that should be less cramped at the bottom. The changes do not erase the difference between Void-Scarred and Annihilator, but they do give Blizzard a cleaner base to build from when Patch 12.1.5 arrives on October 13.
the Collapsing Star cancel change is the one i care about most. getting punished for a target dying or moving out of range always felt awful, especially on a long cast like that. the extra range after it starts sounds like the kind of fix they should’ve shipped way earlier
yeah, the 5 second lockout on a cancelled cast was brutal. even in old wow terms that felt way too punishing for normal movement
exactly, it felt like the game was punishing basic mechanics like target swapping and movement. i’m fine with Blizzard keeping some anti-abuse stuff, but normal play should not eat a 5 second tax
they are just moving the pain around tho. if Collapsing Star becomes mandatory and still has a long cast, people will find the next awkward part to hate
moving The Hunt off the reset chain sounds like a nerf disguised as a feel change. Blizzard always does this when a spec starts looking fun and then they trim the part people actually enjoy
or they just fixed the jank lol
jank is half the class fantasy though
class fantasy of eating bad UI design? yeah no thanks
Monster Rising only giving 10% Int outside demon form now is a pretty big hit. they did buff Collapsing Star damage tho, so i guess they want that button pressed on cd
big hit?
