Blizzard Entertainment has announced Battle for the Darkspear Islands, a new World of Warcraft: Forever battleground set off the shores of Dustwallow Marsh. The map puts the Darkspear Raiders and the Theramore Expeditionary Force into a 15v15 fight for control of the islands, with the first team to reach 2,000 points winning the match.

The battleground is listed for player levels 30-60 and uses a mixed objective structure. Teams earn points by controlling territory across the Darkspear Islands, then add to their total by fighting over a flag placed in the center of the map. Blizzard says the central objective can be carried to a base your team already controls, which adds another way to score while the capture points are still in play.

How the Darkspear Islands match plays

Blizzard describes the map as a 15v15 Capture Point with a Flag Capture Battleground. The main task is to hold four capture points spread across the Darkspear Islands. The more of those points your team controls, the faster it gains score, so territory control directly affects the pace of the match.

The flag in the center gives both teams another target. Players can grab it, carry it to one of their captured bases, and earn extra points for their side. That means the battleground is not just about spreading out to take locations; it also asks teams to decide when to push the middle and when to defend what they already have.

The victory condition is simple: first team to 2,000 points. Blizzard’s announcement focuses on the relationship between the capture points and the flag, making both sides of the map matter throughout the match instead of turning the fight into a single objective rush.

The announcement places the battleground off the coast of Dustwallow Marsh, but the fight itself centers on the islands. That setting gives the mode its own identity inside WoW: Forever, with the Darkspear Islands presented as the battlefield where the two factions clash for strategic footholds and the rewards tied to them.

Where players can queue

Blizzard says players can queue for Battle for the Darkspear Islands in a couple of ways. One option is to visit a battlemaster in any major capital city. The other is to go directly to faction bases in the Barrens and enter through a portal.

For Horde players, the battleground entrance is the Darkspear Raiders base at the Merchant Coast. Alliance players can use the Theramore Expeditionary Force base at Northwatch. Blizzard presents both locations as direct access points to the battleground, with the portal taking players into the fight.

Those bases are also more than launch points. Blizzard says they include vendors with reputation rewards, and players can pick up battleground quests there as well. That ties the queue locations to the reward loop, so players can enter the battleground and work toward faction progression from the same places.

The announcement does not give a release date, but it does spell out the map’s structure, the level range, the queue locations, and the reward systems attached to each side. The details make clear that Battle for the Darkspear Islands is designed to be both a standard battleground and a progression route for players interested in faction standing.

Faction reputation rewards

Battle for the Darkspear Islands includes a reputation track for each faction: the Darkspear Raiders and the Theramore Expeditionary Force. Blizzard says players can buy gear and consumables as their standing increases, with rewards that include trinkets, rings, cloaks, weapons, and armor pieces at different reputation thresholds.

There are also battleground quests tied to those reputation tracks. Turning them in awards Marks of Honor, and reaching Exalted unlocks a short questline that grants the faction’s exclusive tabard. That gives the battleground a clear progression path beyond the match itself, with rewards spread across gear, consumables, quest turn-ins, and cosmetic items.

Blizzard’s announcement also makes the faction split part of the reward structure. The Darkspear Raiders and the Theramore Expeditionary Force each have their own reputation track, their own vendors, and their own quest rewards, so the battleground’s team conflict continues after the match ends. Players who keep queueing can build standing, unlock more purchases, and eventually earn the tabard tied to their side.

The battleground’s structure also means the central flag is only one piece of a broader score race. Teams can gain points by holding territory, push for extra score with the flag, and use their faction bases as part of the scoring path. Blizzard’s setup gives players several reasons to fight over the same spaces, especially the middle of the map and the bases that connect to each team’s progress.

  • Type of map: 15v15 Capture Point with a Flag Capture Battleground
  • Location: Off the shores of Dustwallow Marsh
  • Player levels: 30-60
  • Victory condition: First team to 2,000 points
  • Primary objectives: Four capture points and a central flag
  • Queue options: Battlemaster in any major capital city, or faction base portals in the Barrens
  • Horde base: Darkspear Raiders at the Merchant Coast
  • Alliance base: Theramore Expeditionary Force at Northwatch
  • Reward tracks: Darkspear Raiders and Theramore Expeditionary Force reputation
  • Rewards: Gear, consumables, Marks of Honor quests, and faction tabards at Exalted

Blizzard ends the announcement by telling players to rally allies, queue up for battle, and fight to secure the Darkspear Islands for their faction in WoW: Forever.

15v15 with four points and a flag sounds a bit cramped for a map this size. If one team snowballs the middle, the whole 2k race could get ugly fast.

I do not mind the smaller size if the objectives force movement. A 15v15 map can feel much better than a bloated one when there are only four capture points and one central flag to juggle, because every death matters more. My worry would be the opposite of yours, that it becomes too chaotic for casual groups.

fair, but chaos is exactly why i am skeptical. if the middle decides too much, then the side points become fake objectives and the map turns into one giant brawl with extra steps

gear and consumables in the rep track already tells me this is gonna be a slog. blizzard loves turning battlegrounds into another weekly chores list

I think the rep rewards make more sense here than in a random vendor city. If you already plan to queue battlegrounds, getting cloaks or tabard progress at the same spot is not bad.

yeah and then they tuck the good stuff behind exalted and call it ‘progression’ like we’re not supposed to notice the grind. do you actually enjoy doing bg reps or just tolerate it for cosmetics?

I do enjoy it when the rewards are visual, yes. If the tabard is exclusive and the vendors have useful pieces, I will probably play enough to reach exalted.

tabard bait works on everyone i guess. i still think the grind is doing most of the selling though

30-60 also means fewer people sitting at the top end with maxed-out everything, which is nice. if the scaling is decent, it could be way less miserable than the usual max level stomps.

kinda the opposite imo, lower bracket can be the best part if the objectives are clean. 30-60 means more alts, more junk gear, but also less full sweat meta brain than max level. if the flag and cap points actually matter together, that bracket could be way better than the usual zergfest.

for anyone who has done these kind of faction portals before, which queue is usually better? battlemaster in capital or the base portal in the barrens? i mostly just want the fastest way in without sitting around forever. also do these rep quests end up being worth doing while you queue, or is that just bait for extra grind?

In my experience battlemaster is usually safer if the base portal is far from where you are. But if the faction base has vendor and quests right there, people will spam it a lot in the first weeks. For rep quests, yes, if they are simple turn-ins for Marks of Honor, it is free value while you play.

Do you think the central flag will be worth contesting, or will most teams just turtle the four points and ignore it? I’m trying to guess how pug groups will actually play this.

In pugs, they will 100% overchase the flag the second someone picks it up. If one team has two or three points already, people usually stop thinking and just zug the shiny objective.
