Hangar 13 has released a Steam update for Mafia III: Definitive Edition to mark the game’s 10-year anniversary and has lined up more community activity for later this month. The post says the update is live now, and it folds in a limited-time franchise sale alongside new Discord prompts and a late-October screenshot challenge.
Steam patch targets mission blockers and crashes
The anniversary update, dated Oct. 8 in the notes, focuses on keeping the story moving. Hangar 13 says it fixed spots where players reported getting stuck in missions such as “Get Enzo Conti,” “Kill Tommy Marcano,” and the Epilogue. It also lists crash fixes tied to driving into the Wharf, shooting a gas canister during “Destroy Boosted Car Shipment,” and unlocking certain achievements mid-drive.
Several other changes aim to clean up mission flow. The notes say checkpoint reload behavior has been improved across multiple story missions, completed objectives no longer remain marked incomplete in some cases, and a district map issue that could display incorrectly after certain objectives has been addressed. Hangar 13 also fixed wiretap map data and junction box functionality loss after finishing the Stones Unturned DLC.
Companion and enemy behavior received attention as well. The studio called out Alcee, Father James, and other characters that did not always behave as expected during missions and could block progress. Vehicle spawning was adjusted to reduce unintended collisions during specific objectives, and the patch also addresses instability during cutscenes, save loading, and combat, along with a bug that could leave the game stuck in slow motion after certain sequences.
One other gameplay fix targets a case where previously completed objectives could still appear incomplete. The notes also mention a reported issue that prevented the district map from displaying correctly after certain objectives, plus a group of fixes for weapons and weapon upgrades. Hangar 13 says it also addressed achievement progress loss if the game was closed mid-session.
Visual fixes, PC tweaks, and UI cleanup
Hangar 13’s patch notes cover a broad sweep of visual and technical issues. The developer says it fixed several cases of incorrect or flickering lighting in interior and exterior environments, along with objects and environmental assets that could render with an unintended metallic or overexposed look. Lighting draw distance for buildings, streetlights, and gas stations has been improved to reduce pop-in while driving.
The update also addresses unnatural square artifacts, inconsistent shadow and lighting behavior on Lincoln and nearby NPCs, and reported instances of missing audio, graphical artifacts, and unnatural animation in cutscenes. A window-border toggle has been added, new FPS lock options now go up to 120, 144, 180, and 240, and windowed-mode handling for multi-monitor setups has been improved. Hangar 13 says it also fixed physics issues that could show up in windowed mode with Vsync on.
UI changes cover missing or misplaced waypoints during story objectives, outdated or placeholder text in some interface elements, subtitle settings that could reset when the game launched, and an issue that let the mouse cursor move outside the game window on multiple monitors. The patch also addresses crosshair problems, debug text appearing at the end of cinematics, inconsistent feedback for damage indicators, item icons, and upgrade confirmations, plus missing or corrupted text in non-English languages.
The update notes close with additional improvements to UI clarity and consistency across menus and HUD elements. Hangar 13 does not describe these as new systems or content drops; instead, they read as a wide cleanup pass for a game that first launched in 2016 and has since been reissued in Definitive Edition form.
Franchise sale is live until Oct. 22
Alongside the patch, Hangar 13 is promoting a Mafia franchise sale that runs through Oct. 22. According to the announcement, Mafia III: Definitive Edition is discounted by 80%, while The Omertà Collection bundle is 50% off. The post says the discounts are based on 2K’s SRP, are digital only, and end at 10:00 AM PT on Oct. 22.
Mafia III: Definitive Edition includes the base game, all Story DLC — Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times — and the Family Kick-Back Pack plus the Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack. It is also part of The Omertà Collection, the series’ four-game bundle. Hangar 13 points players to the collection in the Steam announcement, but the anniversary post itself centers on Mafia III.
The studio frames the anniversary around Lincoln Clay’s story. Mafia III launched on Oct. 7, 2016, and follows Lincoln as he works through a violent revenge campaign in New Bordeaux, the mob-run city set in 1968. Hangar 13 describes the game as a look at the American South in the late ’60s, and it uses the anniversary post to invite both returning players and newcomers back to the setting.
Discord prompts and a screenshot challenge are coming later this month
Hangar 13 says the celebration will continue later in October with two community events. The first will run on the official Mafia Discord, where the studio plans to share Mafia III-themed prompts and hear from the community. Members who take part at least once across all three activity types will earn a unique Discord icon tied to the anniversary.
In late October, the team plans a Mafia III Screenshot Challenge. Hangar 13 says it will work like the Mafia: The Old Country Photo Mode Challenge earlier this year, and that the studio will highlight favorite submissions with commentary from its developers after the event wraps. More details on how to participate in the Discord activities and the screenshot challenge are due in the coming weeks.
The “Honoring the Family” section of the post also spotlights recent community work, including captures and fan art from 77_Pouya_77(S_LooK_VP), Snikki, Doctor Gouache, Star_Clover, and dannyburke. Hangar 13 says it has been pleased to see players show off the grit and beauty of Mafia settings through Photo Mode, screenshots from other Mafia titles, and art made by fans.
The post ends by pointing readers toward the official Mafia Discord and promising more Family Business updates in the future. It also keeps the focus on the series’ community rather than new story content for Mafia III itself, using the anniversary to push patch notes, discounts, and the next round of fan activity together in one announcement.
new FPS caps up to 240 on Mafia III is wild for a game that still fights the player on simple objectives. imagine getting hard-stuck by the epilogue and then flexing a 240hz monitor lol
worth replaying now?
If you bounced off it before, probably. The patch stuff is mostly mission blockers, crashes, and UI cleanup, so it’s more about making the thing less annoying than magically turning it into a different game. On the other hand, if you’re waiting for a proper excuse to do Lincoln’s route again, cheaper DLC and fewer bugs is about as good as it’ll get.
